Buenos Aires is a city shaped by successive waves of migration. The Italian, Galician, Basque and other communities that historically shaped its neighbourhoods are now joined by new migratory flows, including those from Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru. This layered territory is currently being transformed by a range of forces: real-estate pressure, gentrification and touristification, the demolition of historic buildings and construction of high-rise towers, changes in commerce and services, as well as forms of regulation and control of public space. In response to these processes, neighbourhood resistance, community networks, and movements defending heritage and local ways of life have emerged.
The project identifies five drivers of urban transformation: survival, valorisation, exclusivity, regulation and preservation. Each expresses a different logic of territorial production: sustaining life, extracting value from land, producing distinction, ordering and controlling territory, or maintaining ways of life, social bonds and forms of belonging.
